Stainless Steel Scrap Metal Guide

Stainless steel is a premium scrap metal valued for its chromium and nickel content. Unlike regular steel, stainless steel resists corrosion, doesn't rust, and maintains a shiny appearance. The nickel content in common stainless steel grades (like 304 and 316) is what drives its higher scrap value compared to carbon steel.

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, and approximately 90% of end-of-life stainless steel is collected and recycled into new products. At Bare Metals, we accept all grades of stainless steel at our Griffin, Newnan, and Atlanta locations with competitive pricing and instant cash payments.

Grades of Stainless Steel We Buy

304 Stainless Steel (18/8) - Good Price

The most common stainless steel grade, containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Found in kitchen sinks, cookware, food processing equipment, and appliances. 304 is non-magnetic or slightly magnetic and makes up about 50% of all stainless steel production.

316 Stainless Steel (Marine Grade) - Premium Price

Contains additional molybdenum for superior corrosion resistance, especially in saltwater environments. Found in marine hardware, chemical processing, medical instruments, and pharmaceutical equipment. 316 commands a higher price due to its higher nickel and molybdenum content.

430 Stainless Steel (Ferritic) - Lower Price

Contains chromium but little to no nickel, making it magnetic and less valuable than 300-series grades. Found in automotive trim, appliance panels, and some kitchen equipment. The magnet test helps distinguish 430 from 304.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell the difference between stainless steel and regular steel?

Stainless steel resists rust and has a brighter, shinier finish. Regular carbon steel rusts easily and is always strongly magnetic. If the metal is shiny, doesn't rust, and a magnet barely sticks (or doesn't stick at all), it's likely stainless steel.

What is 304 stainless steel worth per pound?

304 stainless steel prices fluctuate with nickel market prices. It is always worth significantly more per pound than regular carbon steel. Call Bare Metals at (770) 467-9573 for current stainless steel prices.
